A review of the biggest spenders in health care lobbying by OpenSecrets reveals that, in the leadup to the 2021-22 election cycle, 16 of the top 25 lobbyists were pharmaceutical & health product organizations (see table below). The top health care lobbyist, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, also ranks at #3 of ALL lobbyists regardless of industry.
Another eye-opening stat: As of September, the health sector lobby has spent a total of $545.7 million in 2022… and of that amount, $283.9 million, or 52%, was spent by pharmaceutical/health product organizations. By comparison, the industry in second place (health service/HMO organizations) has spent $91.4 million this year… less than a third of pharmaceutical/health products.
